Vidalia Onions from Shuman Produce

Family-owned Shuman Produce is headquartered in the center of the Vidalia® growing region in southeast Georgia and has been in the sweet onion industry for more than 30 years.  The legacy began in the mid-1980s with a small family farm in Reidsville, GA and today has become a leading grower and shipper of sweet onions year-round.

Did you know that Vidalia onions are named for the city of Vidalia, Georgia, where they were first sold?  Vidalia onions can only be grown in a 20-county growing region in Southeast Georgia. The Vidalia onion seed is planted in September and then seedlings are transplanted by hand in the winter when they reach the size of a pencil.

When selecting the freshest Vidalia onions, be sure to look for one that feels heavy for its size, does not contain any soft spots and has a dry, brittle root.  If the skin of an onion is dry, don’t worry – it’s still okay!  the skin is a part of the harvesting process and keeps the inner layers fresh.
