Golden Jumbo Cantaloupes

Cantaloupe is a delicious and sweet fruit frequently bought and enjoyed once spring and summer roll around.  Due to high water content, this melon is ideal to dig into on a sunny day.  In addition to being a healthy snack, this juicy fruit offers a variety of health benefits.  A cup of cantaloupe is only 53 calories!  This light snack is filled with vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium and dietary fiber.

Vitamins A and C help maintain healthy hair, skin and vision as well as supporting a healthy immune system.  Cantaloupe is said to help stress and anxiety due to the potassium it contains.  Potassium helps reduce blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels. It also increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain, which helps the body to relax. The amount of dietary fiber found in cantaloup helps to support a healthy digestive system.

Why do King Kullen’s Golden Jumbo Cantaloupes stand out compared to other stores?  The supplier, Sol/Fyffes, explains:

  • Sol/Fyffes grows XL fruit, deploying the latest grafting technology which produces the most consistent quality and eating experience in the industry.
  • They grow cantaloupes with almost a 3 week shelf life when properly stored.
  • Sol/Fyffes cantalaoupes weigh in at roughly 4.3-4.9 pounds compared toother cantaloupe varieties which usually weigh in at 3.0-3.3 pounds.
  • The flesh yield of Sol/Fyffes cantaloupes is more than twice that of cantaloupes from competitive suppliers.

Selecting cantaloupes:

  • A fuller, heavier cantaloupe means a riper fruit.
  • The rind of the cantaloupe should be a cream-colored, yellow or golden color. If the rind is green or gray, the fruit is not ripe.
  • Tap the cantaloupe – you should hear a dull and deep sound. If the sound is hollow and high, the cantaloupe is not yet ripe.
  • Press top of the cantaloupe where the stem was attached – the fruit should give lighty. If it gives too much, the cantaloupe is overripe.
  • Smell the bottom of the cantaloupe – it should give off a light, fruity cantaloupe smell. If the smell is too strong, it is overripe.
  • Look for bruising or damage

Storing cantaloupes:

  • Place in the refrigerator or a crisper bin if bought ripe, no longer than 3-4 days.
  • If cantaloupe was bought unripe, it can be left at room temperature until fruit is ripe. Refrigerate as soon as cantaloupe has reached its ripeness.
  • Do not wash fruit whole or uncut, added moisture will increase the chances of mold and shorten the shelf life of the cantalope.
